Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs Luhut Panjaitan has asked for the licensing and construction work for several railway projects to be fast tracked. Luhut said that this infrastructure is vital for the connectivity that President Joko Widodo wants.

Luhut made the statement after a meeting with several ministers under his coordination. Luhut named two projects that need to be accelerated: construction of the Soekarno Hatta Airport railway and the Jakarta-Bandung express train project.

The minister even asked for a report on the licensing for the express train project by next week. "Give me the report in a few days, and I mean fast," he said after the meeting at his office in Jakarta, Tuesday (2/8). (Read: Wika Deposits Initial Capital for Bullet Train Project After Eid).

Meanwhile, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Special Staff Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa said that Luhut's request was directed at railway projects that have been hampered by bureaucratic problems. Yudhi said Luhut also requested the faster issuance of permits for the railway construction in Kalimantan. (Read: 139 Strategic Projects Stalled, Widodo Summons Ministers).

Presidential Decree No. 3/2016 on the Acceleration of the Implementation of National Strategic Projects defines as strategic the implementation of two railway projects in Kalimantan. One is the Puruk Cahu-Bangkuang railway in Central Kalimantan, and the other is the construction of track in East Kalimantan.

"From what I heard in the meeting, it was that section, but I don’t know about the one in Kalimantan," he said. (Read: Transport Ministry to Issue More Licences for Express Train Development).

Transport Minister Budi Karya Sumadi did not explain what technical measures his ministry would take to speed up the licensing for railway projects. He only said he would conduct a review soon.

Kereta Cepat Indonesia Cina (KCIC) President Director Hanggoro Budi Wiryawan hopes that the Transport Ministry will carry out Luhut's request soon, and issue a full building permit. "Amen. Hopefully the building permit will be issued," he told Katadata by text message.
