House of Representatives (DPR) Deputy Chair Fahri Hamzah was disappointed at the recent dismissal of Arcandra Tahar as Energy and Mineral Resources (EMR) Minister. He alleged there is a serious problem with President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo's people.
He said administrative issues should have been resolved before Arcandra was appointed as the Energy Minister because Indonesia does not allow its citizens to have a dual nationality.
If this problem was clear from the start, then Arcandra would not have had to face this situation, especially considering Arcandra is an important figure for the state, according to Fahri. (Read: Jokowi Dismisses Arcandra, Appoints Luhut as Acting Energy Minister).
“How can he be dismissed after only 20 days? How can people like Arcandra get certainty? This shows that the system surrounding the president is not good enough. How come no one realised he had dual citizenship,” said Fahri at the DPR complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Tuesday (16/8).
After Arcandra was dismissed on Monday (15/8) night, President Jokowi appointed Coordinating Maritime Affairs Minister Luhut Binsar Panjaitan as the acting Energy Minister. “The President has honourably discharged EMR Minister Arcandra Tahar,” announced State Secretary Pratikno at the Presidential Palace complex on Monday night.
Meanwhile, Secretary General of the Gerindra Party Ahmad Muzani said three are responsible for this problem: the State Secretariat, the Foreign Affairs Ministry and the Law and Human Rights Ministry.
“They, especially the State Secretariat, should be the basis for the President's aides,” said Muzani. However, he continued, Gerindra respected Widodo's decision. “Besides, appointing and dismissing (a person) is the President's prerogative.”
As for Arcandra's decision to renew Freeport Indonesia's permit export, Muzani said it will be up to acting EMR Minister Luhut Pandjaitan whether or not to uphold this decision. (Read: Luhut Warns Freeport Not to Push for Contract Renewal).
